Wide panoramic view of rolling West Lothian hills on an overcast spring day, a muddy footpath winding through moorland, small group of walkers visible as silhouettes against a pale sky

It's easy to walk the same route every day and forget that the town you live in contains multitudes. Bathgate and its surrounds sit in a stretch of West Lothian that offers surprising variety for walkers — from the manicured lawns and pond of Balbardie Park to the volcanic drama of the Bathgate Hills, with farmland paths, canal towpaths, and the Almond Valley greenway filling in the space between. For our participants at Vibrant Health Advocates - Calyx, exploring this landscape together has become one of the unexpected joys of the programme.

Balbardie Park is where many of our walks begin, and for good reason. It's flat, well-maintained, and familiar — the kind of place that feels safe for people who haven't exercised in a while. The paths circle the park's pond and sports facilities, and on a typical Tuesday morning you'll find our group moving at a pace that encourages conversation rather than competition. For beginners, a couple of circuits is an entirely respectable outing. For those further along, it's a warm-up before venturing further afield.

The Bathgate Hills — formed by ancient volcanic activity

Balbardie Park — our regular Tuesday start point

The Bathgate Hills to the east of town are something else entirely. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, they offer genuine elevation change, wide moorland views, and the kind of wind-in-your-face exhilaration that reminds you why people have always walked in Scotland. The hills can be boggy in winter and should be approached with some preparation, but the sense of achievement that comes from reaching a high point above the Central Belt on a clear day is hard to match. Several of our longer weekend walks head up here, and they consistently attract the largest groups.

🗺️ The Routes We Walk

  • 🟢 Balbardie Park — Flat, accessible, year-round. Perfect for beginners and the Gentle grade.
  • 🟡 Almond Valley Greenway — Riverside paths, mixed terrain, meditative and quiet.
  • 🔴 Bathgate Hills — Elevation, drama, extraordinary views. Our Challenge grade on weekends.
  • 🔵 Beecraigs Country Park — Woodland and loch routes, used for our Walking for Wellbeing programme.
  • Union Canal Towpath — Flat, traffic-free, connecting communities. Popular for longer Active-grade sessions.

The Almond Valley provides a gentler alternative with its own character — a green corridor running along the River Almond that connects communities, passes historical sites, and offers a genuine sense of moving through landscape rather than across it. This route has become a favourite for participants who want a meditative, quieter experience, away from roads and town noise.

What strikes us, working with participants across all these routes, is how much the landscape itself contributes to wellbeing in ways that go beyond exercise. There's something about being outside, in moving air, with an actual horizon in view, that shifts mental state in ways that a treadmill simply cannot replicate. Ecotherapy — the use of natural environments to support mental health — is increasingly well evidenced in the research literature, and it's something our participants describe in their own words all the time: 'I always feel better after,' 'my head clears,' 'I stop thinking about everything else.'

For us at Vibrant Health Advocates - Calyx, the landscape around Bathgate isn't just a backdrop — it's an active ingredient in what we offer. The fact that it costs nothing to access, that it's right outside people's front doors, and that it scales from a ten-minute stroll to a half-day hill walk makes it one of the most democratic health resources imaginable. We're here to help people find their way into it, and to walk alongside them while they do.
