At its most visible, Calyx's work looks like a group of ten or fifteen people setting off from Kirkton Park on a Tuesday morning, chatting as they go, led by a volunteer in a Calyx hi-vis jacket who knows every path and every person. But behind that walk is a programme architecture built over years to ensure it happens reliably, safely, and in a way that genuinely improves health.
We recruit and train walk leaders from within the Bathgate community. We design graded routes that are accessible by public transport and free to use. We maintain partnerships with NHS Lothian and West Lothian Council that allow us to receive and manage clinical referrals responsibly. We provide digital tools and a WhatsApp coordination network that keep participants connected between sessions. And we collect outcome data — with participant consent — that allows us to demonstrate impact to funders and health partners and to keep improving what we do.
Training walk leaders from within the community
Beyond the direct health outcomes, the work Calyx does builds something harder to measure but equally real: a web of social connection in a town where isolation, particularly among older residents and those managing long-term conditions, is a genuine and underaddressed problem. People who came to us for their blood pressure find they come back for the company. Friendships formed on Calyx walks have led to shared allotments, informal carer networks, and — more than once — people telling us it was the first time in years they felt truly known in their own community. That is not a side effect of our programme. It is part of the point.
From gentle first steps to training your own community walk leaders — Calyx has a programme that meets you where you are.
Our core programme of free, weekly guided walks across Bathgate and West Lothian, graded by distance and pace so everyone from complete beginners to regular walkers can find their level.
A structured 12-week programme combining regular walks with light health coaching and peer support, designed specifically for people whose GP or practice nurse has recommended weight management support.
A gentler programme for people experiencing stress, low mood, or social isolation, partnering with local mental health and social prescribing services to provide a therapeutic, structured walking environment.
Our volunteer walk leader training programme turns motivated community members into qualified, confident group leaders, building the local capacity that keeps Calyx's walking groups running reliably and growing.
